jīn — catty

今天jīn tiān — today

Hold one steady high note, like a doctor’s “aaah”. English has no flat pitch, so it will feel unnaturally robotic — that is correct.

jǐn — barely

紧张jǐn zhāng — nervous

In real speech this tone is mostly LOW, not a full dip-and-rise. Drop to the bottom of your range and stay there; the rise only appears when the syllable is said alone or at the end of a phrase.

The initial: j

[tɕ]

What the mouth does
Tongue TIP down behind the lower teeth, the blade pressed up against the hard palate, released without a puff.
Closest English sound
Between the j in “jeep” and a soft “dz” — but with the tip parked low, which English never does.
Where learners slip
Substituting the English j of “jump”, which pulls the tongue tip up and turns j into zh.
Drill that fixes it
Press the tongue tip against your lower front teeth and keep it there through the whole syllable. If the tip lifts, you have said zh.

The final: -in

[in]

What the mouth does
Tight front i, then tongue-tip n. Mouth ends closed at the front.
Closest English sound
The in in “bin”, with a tenser vowel.
Where learners slip
Letting it drift to ing, which changes the word.
Drill that fixes it
Tip must touch. Say “in… ing… in” and feel the difference at the back.

Tone change you need to know

Two third tones in a row

When a third tone is followed by another third tone, the first one is pronounced as a second tone. 你好 is written nǐ hǎo but said “ní hǎo”. The writing never changes — only the mouth does.

Third tone before any other tone. Before a first, second or fourth tone, the third tone loses its rise entirely and stays low. This “half third” is what you hear in almost all real sentences.
